Its remarkable how many times I have heard an agent say “my friend bought through someone else” or “I don’t get enough referrals”. Lets be honest…..Aren’t you one of them who experienced this as well??
Please let me share my experience. It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon and we decided to invite one of my best friends to our home for a BBQ. How much of a best friend? Well many years ago, he was the best man at my wedding. He’s someone that loves BBQ so I made sure I bought the best steaks with all the fixings. When he arrived, the table was set and as the kids started to play, I asked him to join me by the BBQ just to make sure it was prepared to his perfect liking. As we were sharing some laughs and a few drinks while cooking, he asked me the magic question…..”How’s the market?” With all my experience I went into my regular dialogue that many of us have gone through and I asked him if he knew anyone that was interested in buying or selling. His response sent shock waves through me.
“Well not right because my cousin just bought in Riverdale”. “My family friend just sold in North York” and “my colleague at work recently purchased in Leaside just around your office”
I looked at him in disbelief with eyes staring wide open as if I just witnessed a murder. He asked me if I’m ok and I couldn’t find words. There was a lump in my throat. All I can muster was “WHAT??…..WHY didn’t you call me??” What I heard next made it clear. He said:
“I never knew you still sold real estate, you’re a Broker now”.
Is he wrong to assume? After all I don’t sell real estate. We have over 200 agents that I refer my past clients to. Did I ever explain how our business works? How I work? Did I explain how I can still help? Who fault is it? Is it really our clients fault?
I’m sure we assume everyday that our clients will just call us and provide us with names of friends and colleagues that want to buy and sell homes. WRONG! I realized that its my fault and a very expensive lesson. I also realized that its our fault if we dont constantly remind our clients that we are everything real estate!
