With a title like “The Perfect Haircut”, you are probably wondering if I’m going to write about the challenges of our business, the increased costs or the expectation to sell a home at some reduced Realtor fee. As a matter of fact, I actually want to share my recent haircut experience and how it relates to all businesses…especially as an agent in real estate
Just last week I decided to stroll down Bayview for my monthly haircut. Over the years I have gotten to know the owner of the establishment very well and I look forward to our regular chats. He’s a great person, truly takes pride in what he does and he also provides me with insights from talking to so many different personalities that sit in his chair daily. Typically we share news about business, family and his love for hockey (presently lack thereof). His question to me is always “How’s the real estate market”.
Most recently he shared his love for travel and how he just returned from a holiday with his family. As we were talking, I noticed that he wasn’t his quick, natural flow and cutting self. I asked him if everything is ok and heard something that really put things in perspective.
He shared how the first few days after being away the fingers just aren’t themselves. His fingers and even his wrists are actually sore. Imagine that! Someone who has been cutting hair for over 20 years, goes away for a couple of weeks and he’s rusty. He’s just not himself until he gets back into the swing of things however through the action of repetition……….it all comes back.
Doesn’t this compare to what we do? We go on one or two appointments a week (sometimes a month) and we expect to succeed at every one. We make or receive a few calls and we expect to have our words and answers flow off our tongue. We all know it just doesn’t work that way.
We need to keep “our” tools of the trade sharp. Being a REALTOR is not a hobby. It’s a profession and we need to be constantly in action and engaged in what we do. It’s about service and delivering on promises. When is the last time you were able to deliver the perfect haircut?
