Today I had a MPP come to my door and asked for our support. It doesn’t matter which party that he represented but I must admit my eyes lit up with an opportunity to discuss the state of our beautiful city. I asked questions about the lack of police services, our public school system, the miller tax and what they will do fund our city. The response had my jaw drop. He said and I quote “this is not a provincial responsibility and the city has powers to do as they wish”. He saw how shocked I was and when I pointed out that Toronto is the largest city in Ontario he quickly changed topics. They don’t seem to get it.
Our email campaign must not stop. It’s extremely important that we don’t lose our focus as Realtors. Let’s keep the politicians accountable. Our city needs one of the candidates to step up and commit to our city. When they come to your door and ask for your support, ask them what they will do to support Toronto and stop this tax. Will they deliver the necessary funds they promised in the last election??? It’s not about just taking. How about giving???
Talking about the Miller Tax brings to mind my next point. What if is this tax does pass this October?? What are we doing to protect our Buyer clients, the entire transaction, protecting ourselves and keep proper disclosure to all parties including us as Realtors?

Changes in Property Tax Amounts Due to a proposed City of Toronto tax (Miller Tax)
The Buyer and Seller hereby acknowledge that the City of Toronto may implement a new land transfer tax on all properties purchased in the amalgamated City of Toronto. This (Miller Tax) is proposed to be over and above the current Ontario Land Transfer Tax. The Buyer and Seller agree that no claim will be made against the Buyer or Seller, or any Brokerage, Broker or Salesperson, for any changes in Property tax as a result of a new City of Toronto land transfer tax.
I am not conceding defeat to the proposed tax. Just protecting our clients and our agents in our Brokerage.
