While spending some time with my in-laws around a dinner table, the idea or at least the thought of selling their home came up in conversation. My wife and I always knew that this day may be approaching but we never pushed and always left it to be their decision when ready. After all this is the home they spent over 40 years in, raising their family and filled with beautiful memories.
They presently live in a 5 bedroom, 3 story Riverdale home so before making any decisions, they asked me to personally show them what downsizing to a 2 bedroom East York bungalow really means. Respecting their wishes and understanding the sensitivity of making any move, I searched the MLS computer and came up with 3 homes that I thought would be a perfect start for the educational process. I booked the appointments and showed them all the properties.
This is when the story gets interesting…..
The next day I received an email from one of the agents that have one of the homes for sale asking for showing feedback. She is an agent from another brokerage that I know well, when I practiced real estate respected as a professional and crossed paths quite often.
By the way, that was over 6 years ago!
Her email was very warm and pleasant, asking how I have been and then proceeded to request info about the showing. After reading her email I decided to pick up the phone and call her. I tried her office and she wasn’t there so I decided to try her on her cell phone. She answered the phone and she was so happy to hear from me. We talked for about 15 minutes sharing stories about how we follow each other on Facebook and knowing so much about each other through social media. What’s remarkable is that we then talked for over 20 minutes about things we wouldn’t share online. Our good and bad times, our dark and bright days, our defeats and our victories. We also talked about the house for a couple of minutes.
When we were ready to get off the phone, we both commented on how great it was to really catch up. Without that phone call, there is no way that I would have learned so much of what was going on in her life or for her in my life.
We really connected!!
I am the first to admit that I love Social Media and there is proof society loves it too. There is a place for it in our business and in our personal lives but also pick up the phone and make the call. I am convinced that if you truly want to succeed in your personal and professional life, the human touch will never be replaced. Remember to always really stay connected!
