How do you Remember?

I had one of my embarrassing moments recently.  My daughters  had their school concert and I was there with camera in hand recording and taking pictures.  While there, I noticed a couple with their young family and every time I looked over, they were smiling at me.  I started to feel uncomfortable and wondered if I had something on my face, head or clothing.  I motioned my wife and she assured me that nothing was wrong.  The concert finished and before I knew it the couple were right in front of me with the wife giving me a big hug.

She said with a smile  “Hi Tim, it’s so great to see you and we just want you to know that we still love our house”.  She looked at me with as if we just saw each other yesterday.  It all came flooding back and I could feel my face turning red.  I was so embarrassed that I didn’t remember.  They were clients that bought approximately 12 years ago and I was their salesperson.

I know we get busy trying to make a living and trying to assist clients purchase and or sell real estate.  Throw in a few hundred sign calls, ad calls, a whole bunch of multiple offers, a marriage, 2 children and its easy to understand why some things just don’t stick too long.  Make no mistake, I do have a plan for keeping in touch.  To this day, I still call all my clients every several months, catch up on their life events and even ask for referrals that I happily pass on to our salespeople.  However, we forget that it’s easier for most clients to remember us because some of us send our newsletter on a monthly basis with our glamour shot on it and brag on how great we’re doing.  Our clients however don’t send us anything.

How about taking your sales success to a different level.  How about the idea of taking a picture with your clients in front of a sold sign.  How about adding this picture with the testimonial they provide you in your presentation booklet.  With today’s technology, you can connect to their social media web sites and or even upload their picture to your database management software.  This way every time you call them, you can be reminded of what they looked like.  Imagine how many past clients we could walk by in a mall and not even acknowledge them.  Imagine all the lost income and referrals.  Scary and even more important to implement a system to remember.
