The definition of a goal is:
“The purpose toward which an endeavor is directed; an objective. The final purpose or aim; the end to which a design tends, or which a person aims to reach or attain”.
Many times throughout my career, I have been asked what the most important part of setting goals may be and how to set them. Even though the definition from the dictionary clearly explains that a goal must have a defined purpose, I have also discovered that knowing your “why” would be the best start. Your “why” is the vision and dreams that assists and motivates us to wake up in the morning, to push through our quitting points and the journey that makes everything worth it. It’s not always financial success that we seek through goal settings. It may be to spend more time with family, finally take that special vacation, making choices to live a healthier lifestyle through exercise and diet or simply strive live a balanced lifestyle. I personally discovered my “why” the moment I attempted to write down a list of 100 things I want to do before I die. Now that was an eye opener. It was a remarkable exercise to discover just how many things were not of financial reward. Teaching, Coaching and Mentoring was one of them. The secret…..when you accomplish something keep adding. J
Dream Big! Make them known by sharing your goals. If you’re better with pictures, create a goal board that is always visible to you daily. Goal setters have also shown more motivation and hold themselves accountable. If you need help with this, team up with an accountability partner. We’ve all known people who have been criticized throughout history for being dreamers but every visionary has been inspired to achieve their dreams by pursuing the goals they have set. A great quote is: “you don’t have to be great to start but you do have to start to be great” Zig Ziglar.
Here’s an exercise and your first step. Book some time for yourself in a quiet place to write down your goals. Make 4 columns and title them Business, Financial, Personal and Family. Write down your specific goals under these columns and include a definite timeline. My belief is what ever is written gets done. Writing things down has a tendency to travel from the pen to your hand, up your arm and to your brain. Once completed start reviewing them every morning and night for 30 days. You will be surprised how inspired you will feel and how you will discover how this first small step can change your life.
